Expectations for a film can be very deceiving. Films cast lots of big name stars, gooey special fx, spectacular sets and interesting plot twists. Many times, these films fall short for any number of reasons, many of which could be direction, bad acting or luck, but I am here to tell you that Compound Fracture is not one of those films. Not only did they hit the marks on all of the above attributes, they far exceeded them in every facet. Mane Entertainment not only shot a ghost story that delivers on the chills, but also delivers on all of the small details that can only lead to a film that will lead the way for not only Indie horror, but Hollywood released fare as well. All of the technical aspects of filmmaking are on display, from camera work, lighting, soundtrack and atmosphere. But the true shining light in this film is the acting…

Tyler Mane is man of epic proportions. Easy to say going in for an interview. Sure, he was Wolverine’s brother and nemesis in X-Men, and let us not forget the epic force on nature he became as Michael Myers from Rob Zombies’ Halloween I and II. He is a true physical specimen in person, and he finds ways to exploit that with various looks and his body language, leaving the thought in the back of your mind that if you piss this guy off, he would be more than willing to show you what made him the ideal Michael Myers. What you never would have thought of was his range as an actor. After all, his last couple of roles had little to no speaking…

Compound Fracture will surely change your mind about Tyler’s acting ability. Sharing the role of writer with his wife and co-star Renae Geerlings, the two of them have managed to infuse his role of Michael (coincidence? Maybe…) with a range of emotions and dialogue you would not have believed possible from the man who has played the grunting and monosyllabic Sabertooth or the stoically silent Michael Myers. His interactions with Renae in the film come across as a genuine couple dealing with their issues, and his handling of his father (Muse Watson) and their troubled past. The most dynamic and interesting point in the film is the interaction between Tyler and Derek Mears (as the ghost of his dead brother). Not often do you get to see two horror titans outside of the roles that made them legends face off, but it also made you long to see it on the big screen. Watching Tyler and Derek go toe to toe was amazing, and seeing Tyler being the one thrown around is something that was breathtaking and awe inspiring.

Renae and Tyler deserve a great amount of credit for not only giving us a horror film that builds tension and suspense properly, but also gives a depth of character development that makes us care about the characters and their dilemma. The dialog is smart and sharp without coming across as snarky or smug, and the locations in the film help lead to the sense of isolation, despair and madness. Renae mentions the amount of research she did for the various runes and symbols that are on display in the film, and she was spot on. The amount of research and work put into even the smallest details help to push the story along and lends to the credibility and atmosphere of the film. Having other iconic horror legends like Derek Mears, Muse Watson, Leslie Easterbrook and Todd Farmer in the film raised the profile even higher, with everyone in the cast giving top notch performances.

This film is ultimate proof that you do not need to have a major studio or millions of dollars behind you to make horror gold. Real hard work, talent and drive has brought Mane Entertainment to the forfront of the Indie horror genre, and I for one am looking forward to more from this talented bunch of filmmakers. No cheese and playing straight forward, if you are looking for a ghost story that is not overdone and you like intelligent, well thought out plots, this is the film for you. I highly recommend it!

“I remember vividly taking the Clarence 4 bus into town as a kid to see movies,” states Mane. “It means so much to me to be able to have the premiere event of our tour in my home town at the Broadway Theatre. I don’t get to come home enough, and to come home with the first public screening of my production company’s first film is huge.”Shot in Los Angeles, Compound Fracture stars three of today’s most iconic killers, Tyler Mane, Derek Mears and Muse Watson. Leslie Easterbrook, Daniel Roebuck, Todd Farmer and Renae Geerlings (who co-wrote) are also in the cast. Directed by Anthony J. Rickert-Epstein and produced by Mane’s production company, Mane Entertainment, Compound Fracture will screen in select cities across the country through the end of July.Michael Wolffsen (Mane) has just gotten custody of his only sister’s son after she was murdered by her husband before his very eyes. When he receives an urgent phone call, Michael takes his nephew and wife and makes the journey home to his only other living relative: his estranged, eccentric (and extremely paranoid) father (Watson) who is obsessed with building an unassailable compound. Once there, Michael hopes to repair his shattered family, but instead he finds that they are all trapped inside his father’s creation when the ghost of his vengeful brother-in-law (Mears) returns to wipe out the rest of the Wolffsen family.

COMPOUND FRACTURE is the first feature from actor Tyler Mane’s new production imprint Mane Entertainment, and what a debut it is. Genre mainstays Leslie Easterbrook (THE DEVIL’S REJECTS) and Muse Watson are on hand for this dramatic genre bender, but it’s the promise of an on-screen monster mash between “Michael Myers” Mane, and Derek Mears (FRIDAY THE 13TH 2009) that is sure to have Fango readers salivating.

While these terror titans are perhaps best known for bringing silent, hulking beasts to life in their respective franchise reboots, here they enter very different territory, eschewing masks and grue for the gritty realism of fractured family mechanics. Mane, our lead, is Michael Silna, traveling with his wife Juliette (Mane’s real life wife and co-writer Renae Geerlings), to the house where he grew up for a most unusual reunion. In tow is nephew Brandon (Alex Saxon), the morose son of Silna’s deceased sister, as disinterested as he is unfamiliar with the new family surrounds.

As the trio approaches their destination, they find something less a home, and more of a military compound. High walls and security gates give way to a modest abode littered with security cameras and monitoring devices tucked in every nook, book, and corner. At the center of it all is Michael’s estranged father Gary (Watson), the paranoid mind behind the voyeuristic confines and over-the-top protection methods. As downtrodden Annabelle (Easterbrook) explains, things are bad, and communication with Gary has become erratic and sparse. As Michael sets about repairing his crumbling family, a ghost from the past (Mears) comes knocking, and the Silnas are forced to band together against a presence most sinister…

Co-writer and star Geerlings is no stranger to turns of the pen, coming from a background that includes a long stint as Editor In Chief for Top Cow Comics, and now as Senior Editor at Radical Publishing. Her years toiling behind titles such as WITCHBLADE and TOMB RAIDER prepped her for her partnership with beau Mane on this ambitious freshman effort, and the results are admirable. What could be handled as a simple tale of an unlikely group forced to reckon with a murderous intruder, here turns into a taut slow boil that invests the audience first in the characters, and then in their harrowing struggle.

Easterbrook is fantastic as the long-suffering Annabelle, sheepish in the shadow of the overwhelming Watson. As wide eyed Gary, Watson finds a nice balance between joy (as the father unexpectedly reunited with his long-lost son) and madness (his tireless vigilance protecting what he holds most dear). Newcomer Saxon brings a relatable affection to the alienated Brandon, shining in scenes where his character makes the turn from walled-off angsty teen to invested son.

What really stands out here is the maturity with which Mane handles the character of Michael, riding an arc that takes him from cold and distant at the outset, to focused and compassionate by the end. As Mane enters his father’s house for the first time in decades, he explores the space with clear familiarity tinged with sadness and regret. Whatever has kept him apart from his father is simmering under the surface, and you feel the weight of the confrontations to come as Michael juggles duty as son, husband, father, and eventually, protector. Throughout it all, Mane remains grounded, and elevates the proceedings in his first leading role. Mears, comparatively, is appropriately violent and menacing in his performance, but the less said about his character, the better, for those who haven’t seen the picture yet.

Director and cinematographer Anthony Rickert-Epstein handles the proceedings satisfyingly, managing to keep Mane’s massive frame from dominating shots and overcrowding rooms—no easy task, considering his star’s 6’9” stature. That being said, the editing was a bit jagged at times, moving uneasily through some sequences in a way that might confuse character locations within their space here and there, but this is nothing too distracting. It would also have been nice to see a bit more of the aftermath of Mears’ nastiness, but the understated approach was likely a calculated one. The colors are a bit washed, lending a nice seasonal feel to the autumnal environment, and the few digital effects present, play nicely.

The climactic battle between Mane and Mears is less Freddy Vs. Jason and more Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, lending a humanity to something that could have easily been played over the top, considering its marquee value. It’s a satisfying duel between giants, and neither character steps outside what is established prior, which is appreciated. Compound Fracture is a solid first outing from Mane Entertainment, utilizing an excellent cast in a layered story of madness, knotted family roots, and supernatural revenge.
